Field note

RTO / RPO in practice

RTO is the longest acceptable delay before a service is restored. RPO is the maximum acceptable amount of recent data loss, expressed as time before the disruption.

Origin and evolution

Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point Objective grew out of business-continuity and disaster-recovery planning as two separate questions: how quickly must we return, and how far back may our data fall?

How it is used

The objectives determine backup frequency, replication design, standby capacity and the cost of a recovery architecture.

Why it matters

Saying “we have backups” is incomplete unless the organisation knows whether restoration speed and data loss meet business needs.

In a sentence“Payroll has a four-hour RTO and a fifteen-minute RPO, so a nightly backup is not enough.”
