Field note

USP / UVP in practice

A USP or UVP expresses the distinctive value a product promises and the reason a particular audience should choose it over the available alternatives. A useful proposition is specific, relevant and supportable—not merely a slogan.

Origin and evolution

USP means “Unique Selling Proposition”; UVP means “Unique Value Proposition”. Modern product teams often prefer UVP because it begins with customer value rather than the act of selling.

How it is used

It guides landing-page copy, product positioning, sales conversations and the evidence a team must collect to prove its claim.

Why it matters

Without a clear proposition, marketing tends to list features while customers are left to work out why those features matter.

In a sentence“Our UVP is not ‘easy reporting’; it is producing an audit-ready report in minutes without specialist training.”
